A great deal of effort and time can go into improving a website's rank in search engines, with a majority of the tasks potentially taking days or weeks depending on the size and nature of the pages in question. These large, monumental tasks are a necessary part of any SEO plan, but there are also several smaller, more compact tasks that you can preform for an hour a day both during and after your site's SEO overhaul that can cause a large jump in your page's rank on the results pages of several search engines out there.
All of these tasks actually deal with 'off the page' factors, and focus primarily on inbound links and generating traffic. Since that's the goal of all SEO campaigns, these tasks are a natural fit into any plan to reach it. Contacting other websites and requesting a link back to your site is one particularly useful option. Generally, you give something in return, which can be creating a link on your site pointing to theirs or some other form of payback. While swapping links can be useful, it is good to know that doing it too much (or doing it with a site infamous for the use of reciprocal links) can have a negative effect. Thanks to spammers utilizing this method in the late '90s and early 2000s, search engines today may penalize a website by lowering its page rank if it determines that the website in question is swapping links with other sites too much, and any site that is linking to them may fall with them. For the most part, it is easy to spot a potential problematic site, and there should not be a problem for you as long as you pay attention. It is also worth mentioning that sites related to your field of business or study linking to your site. As Google and other search engines interpret this as a 'vote of confidence' by the site creating the link, the search engines will rank you site that much higher that much faster. Sites that have little relation to yours creating an inbound link is not quite as helpful, though such links cannot hurt your site. Having your website listed in a directory can be a great way of generating some traffic. There are many directories out there for a variety of topics, with some being rather broad while others are more focused as to the subject matter they will link to. Some will list your site for free, while others charge for the service. Soliciting links from blogs is also a brief, hour a day task that can potentially yield massive benefits. This is more true of highly viewed and respected blogs that cover the kind of service your website offers. These tasks can fit into almost any schedule, and the potential benefits of such tasks are worth the hour a day you can spend performing them. Not only are such tasks an efficient use of time and money, but the continuing positive results can be an encouragement to yourself and keep you in positive standing with management, as increasing website traffic is what your boss is paying you for in the first place.
